Menopause Supplement:
Don't Believe Everything You Read

Can a menopause supplement "cure" menopause? There are many menopause supplements on the market that make what I consider outrageous claims “cure menopause” “get rid of menopause.” Can you cure adolescence?

Menopause is a time when your body's hormones are shifting around. You don't even want that to change. The reason we have so many intolerable symptoms is due to our diets and lifestyle, not menopause itself.

At any rate, if you are looking for menopause to go away, or to eliminate all your symptoms by taking a pill, you've come to the wrong place. There is no such pill. Even HRT, which comes with risks and side effects, may not do that.

There certainly is no herb or vitamin that will do that, although I have heard some pretty amazing testimonials from people taking different combinations of nutrients.

The best way to look at menopause is as an invitation to look at your life, and see what positive changes you want to make.

There are several types of menopause supplements, depending on what you are looking for. If you want HRT without the risks, then bHRT (bioidentical hormone therapy) might be for you. BHRT is less risky, and balances your hormones, so that many symptoms may be alleviated from this therapy. For more on bioidentical hormones, see bioidentical progesterone and natural estrogen replacement

If you don't want to use bHRT, you can make changes in your diet, and add nutrients through vitamins and herbs. Some herbs can help balance your hormones, which is what HRT does, but herbs are much gentler on your body.

What to look for, and look out for, in a menopause supplement

If you want to go all natural, using diet, herbs, vitamins and other menopause supplements, you will need to narrow down the benefits you are looking for.

If you are going to buy a menopause supplement, there are certain things to consider. Some vitamins are toxic in their synthetic form. Vitamin D is one of them. If there is vitamin D in the product, it needs to be D3, cholecalciferol (that is the natural form).

Vitamin E is also toxic in synthetic form (dl-alpha tocopherol). The natural form is d-alpha-tocopherol. Vitamin E in food actually has several tocopherols, not just alpha, and also tocotrienols. The best way to get Vitamin E is with all of these components.

Wheat germ oil is a good source of vitamin E, if you don't take that, try to get E with all or some of the components above, at a minimum do not take synthetic vitamin E. For more about vitamin E including precautions, see vitamins for hot flashes

Vitamin A and beta-carotene ARE NOT THE SAME. You will see beta carotene called vitamin A everywhere. I cannot believe this is done so much, because many people, including people with low thyroid and diabetics may not be able to convert beta carotene into vitamin A. You need the real deal. Vitamin A can only come from animal products. Carrots do not contain vitamin A!

Avoid products containing soy or isoflavones, which will be most of them. Soy has many problems ingested in this form, and taking large doses of isoflavones has been found to be risky.

For more about soy, see soy and menopause I am not giving you conventional wisdom here. If you go to some doctor-oriented or institutional site, you will not get this information. Don't take my word for it, do your own research. Sites such as Price-Pottenger, Weston A Price, and Mercola.com will validate what I am telling you.

Calcium and magnesium are important for menopausal women, but you need about 1200mg calcium and at least half of that amount of magnesium. Supplements containing 100mg aren't going to do you much good.

There are several herbs that are well known for balancing hormones. These are wild yam (NOT the same as progesterone cream), vitex (chasteberry), dong quai, maca root, and black cohosh

Combining some of them may work better than using them alone.

Here are a couple of high quality herbal formulas to try. The first is by Oregon's Wild Harvest, one of my very favorite companies. They produce very high quality supplements at very economical prices, and they have the highest ethics. They do not put a bunch of toxic preservatives in their products either: just pure, sustainably produced medicinal herbs.

Their Menopause Formula contains black Cohosh root (Cimicifuga racemosa), organic alfalfa tops (Medicago sativa), organic Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), and red Clover tops (Trifolium pratense). To read more about these herbs individually, see herbs for menopause

Another excellent product is from Herb Pharm. I learned about this company from my herbal medicine teacher and I have been using their products for almost twenty years. Their menopause formula is called Healthy Menopause Compound. It contains whole extracts of Chaste Tree berry (Vitex agnus-castus), motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), black cohosh (Cimicifuga racem.), licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), and Pulsatilla flowering herb (Anemone puls.)

Both of these products are from whole plants. They contain no artificial preservatives or anything else artificial. They are probably more affordable than many menopause supplements on the market. Menopause Formula is a 30-day supply. Healthy Menopause Compound is only about a 10-day supply, but it's under $8.  Planetary Herbals is another high quality supplement company, you will find their menopause formula below.
